Crispy Air Fried Tofu (Gluten-Free and Oil-Free)

The best and easiest way to get crispy air-fried tofu without any oil.

  • 1 block (14 ounces) Firm or Extra Firm Tofu
  • ¾ cup Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Gluten-Free Flour
  • ¼ cup cornmeal, masa, or corn flour
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  1. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl, or a paper sack.

  2. Drain the tofu from the package, and cut it into 1-inch cubes. Do not dry the tofu. It needs to stay wet.

  3. If you would like to marinate the tofu, do that the night before, I have a couple of recipes for marinades below.

  4. Working in small batches, coat the wet tofu in the flour mixture. Place onto a baking sheet or wire rack to rest. Let your tofu sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until flour mixture has soaked up some liquid, and the surface of the tofu is no longer powdery.

  5. Heat your air-fryer to 400 degrees F. Place the tofu in a single layer in the air fryer, and allow to cook about 20 minutes -- flipping or tossing halfway through -- or until the tofu is golden and crispy. Work in batches if you cannot fit all of your tofu in a single layer all at once.

  6. Serve immediately with a dipping sauce, in curries, or on top of salads.

Recipe Notes

Note: because there is no oil to block out moisture, the tofu will soften slightly as it sits. Return them to the air-fryer to crisp them up again.
